The World Bank has secured an extra $117 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to extend GALOP to all public primary schools and kindergartens nationwide. This initiative aims to prepare students and cultivate essential skills necessary for advancing basic education in the country.
Dr. Robert Taliercio, the World Bank Country Director, announced the additional grant and credited it with the project’s success.
The project initially aimed to support 10,000 underperforming primary and kindergarten schools in Ghana.
During a site visit to a Ghana Learning and Accountability Outcomes Project (GALOP) school, Dr. Taliercio and Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu pledged to evaluate the project’s progress in implementation.
The World Bank president and the Education Minister visited St Thomas Presbyterian Primary School (Osu) and Kindergarten.
The GALOP, a $335.83 million initiative, seeks to enhance education quality in underperforming basic schools while bolstering equity and accountability within Ghana’s education sector.
He stated that the latest additions have raised the total disbursement to $335.83 million.
Dr. Taliercio mentioned that the World Bank initially allocated $218.7 million for the project, which is anticipated to conclude in 2026.
The Country Director vowed the Bank’s dedication to enhancing education in the nation.
He believed education was crucial for alleviating poverty, preparing young people for the workforce, and fulfilling the nation’s human resource requirements.
Dr. Taliercio motivated the students to dedicate themselves to their studies and achieve excellence in their education.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu commended the World Bank for its continuous dedication to advancing the country’s education sector.
