Exciting news from Wenchi Methodist Hospital (WMH). The hospital recently celebrated the groundbreaking of a new 80-bed Orthopaedic Centre, set to cost €600,000. This major expansion will boost the hospital’s capacity from 50 to 130 beds, enhancing its ability to provide top-notch care.
The new centre, a collaborative effort with the German Government, will receive €450,000 in funding from Germany, with WMH contributing €150,000 for equipment and staff training. Construction is expected to be completed within 18 months.
A Hub of Excellence
The expanded facility will feature a dedicated area for children, as well as sections for both short and long-term stays. It’s designed to become a premier training and research centre for orthopaedics.
CEO Alexander Kwaku Kyei emphasized the importance of high-quality construction and urged the contractor, Dot. Dent Ltd, to maintain high standards and adhere to the project timeline. The centre will serve a broad range of patients, including those from neighboring Burkina Faso and La Cote d’Ivoire.
A Comprehensive Upgrade
Enoch Osafo, Director of Health for the Methodist Church Ghana, highlighted the centre’s dual role in treating trauma cases and training future medical professionals. “Once completed, the centre will be fully equipped to handle all types of orthopedic cases and conduct essential research,” he said.
With the rise in motorcycle and tricycle accidents in the region, the new centre will be crucial in providing timely care and addressing mass casualty situations.
Community Support
The funding from the German Federal Government was secured thanks to Kwame Abrefa Busia, a Wenchi native living in Germany, whose ongoing support has been invaluable. Bishop Right Reverend Alfred Appiah Andam praised his efforts and appealed for additional support to complete the hospital’s new residential apartment for medical staff.
The new orthopedic center will significantly boost the hospital’s capabilities and services, becoming an essential resource for both the community and the surrounding areas.
