An Accra High Court has ordered the detention of two South Africans and a Nigerian, who are charged with the possession of more than 16 kg of methamphetamine, a narcotic substance.
This follows their arrest by officials of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) at the Kotoka International Airport on January 20, 2025.
The individuals accused, whose names are being withheld, allegedly hid the drugs in two suitcases.
Presided over by Justice Kizita Koowa Quarshie, the Court ordered all female defendants to be remanded and required them to reappear on February 11, 2025.
However, their pleas were not considered, and the facts and charges were not presented.
The trial judge firmly advised the accused to secure legal representation to prepare for their defense during court proceedings adequately.
A senior state attorney, Mr. Watkins Adamah, requested that the court hold the accused in lawful custody.
Mr. Adamah stated that the first and second accused were South Africans who traveled from Rwanda to Ghana. They were discovered with identical suitcases containing over 16 kg of methamphetamine, a concealed narcotic drug.
He said, “Control delivery involving the first and second accused led to the arrest of the third accused person, a Nigerian who had traveled from Nigeria to Ghana, and she met first and second accused persons with similar suitcases to swap them for the narcotic drugs.”
The State Attorney noted that additional individuals were mentioned, that NACOC expressed interest in the issue, and that further investigation is required.
He mentioned that the State would also seek confirmation from the Ghana Standards Authority regarding the type of narcotic substances recovered from the accused individuals.
