Police Officer Arrested in Fatal Shooting Over Fare Dispute

Smith Gyekyi, a police officer with the International Relations Directorate (IRD), has been arrested following a tragic incident at Koans Estate early Sunday morning. Gyekyi, who was driving a commercial Matiz vehicle (GW 6459-21), is accused of shooting 25-year-old Stanley Ahadzi to death over a disagreement about the fare.

The drama unfolded around 3:00 AM when Gyekyi was transporting passenger Esther Owusua from Ablekuma Joma to Koans Estate. Owusua had lost her way and called Ahadzi for help. When Ahadzi arrived at the estate gate, tensions flared between him and Gyekyi over the fare, quickly escalating into a heated argument.

According to witnesses, Gyekyi pulled out his police sidearm and shot Ahadzi without warning. When crime scene investigators arrived, Ahadzi was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency efforts.

The case is under urgent investigation. Gyekyi is in custody, and his firearm has been seized. Ahadzi’s body has been taken to the Police Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has promised that justice will be served. He visited Ahadzi’s family on Sunday, August 18, to offer his condolences.
