Obuasi Clashes Lead to Closure of AngloGold Ashanti Schools

AngloGold Ashanti Schools closed due to clash in Obuasi

AngloGold Ashanti Schools are temporarily closed in response to escalating security concerns in Obuasi.

The town has experienced incidents in which vehicles owned by private entities and individuals have been set on fire, causing damage to private properties.

This follows violent confrontations between small-scale miners and military personnel guarding the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine, resulting in the reported deaths of eight individuals.

In a press release issued on January 19, the school’s management stated that the closure aims to ensure the safety and welfare of students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders.

Schools will stay closed on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, 2025. If calm is restored, they aim to reopen on Wednesday, January 23.

Residents and stakeholders in the Obuasi community remain optimistic about quickly resolving the area’s security issues.
