Last year, the Northern Region reported 373 fires, with property damage estimated at GH₵68,217,224, marking an increase from the 2023 record of 312 fires.
A report from the Northern Regional Command of the Ghana Fire Service, signed by Public Relations Officer Baba Hudu, indicates that an average of one fire incident was recorded daily in 2024.
The report indicated that 137 out-on-arrival cases were recorded in 2024, compared to 133 during the same period in 2023.
Domestic fires topped the list with 189 incidents, followed by electrical fires at 49, commercial fires at 44, and vehicular fires at 29. Additionally, there were 21 bushfires, 17 institutional fires, 3 industrial fires, and 21 other types of fires.
The command reported no fatalities due to flooding, and all depths and heights were successfully rescued, except for a fire incident that resulted in one death.
In 2024, there were 20 recorded injuries and four fatalities across 29 road traffic incidents. This represents an increase from 2023, with four fatalities from 23 incidents.
The release indicated a new trend in fire outbreaks for 2024, mainly affecting unfinished structures, resulting in 19 incidents.
The Command has voiced concern that within 20 days of the new year, the region has already experienced 40 fire incidents. These include two significant fires on January 6, 2025, affecting the warehouse of GSL African LTD and the Tamale timber market.
The Northern Regional Command encouraged the public to make a concerted effort to avoid behaviors that could cause fires.
