Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced yesterday that Malaysia, a long-time advocate for Palestinian rights and freedoms, will aid Gaza’s reconstruction.
He expressed hope that Malaysia’s prayers would support the longevity of the ceasefire announced on Thursday.
“There are challenges, but we pray the ceasefire will hold. We will assist in the reconstruction of Gaza,” he said during a brief speech at the East London Mosque before joining congregants for Friday prayers.
Anwar expressed gratitude for Japan’s invitation to Malaysia to co-chair the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD), which aims to focus on the reconstruction of Gaza.
A ceasefire agreement facilitated by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar is set to commence on Sunday, seeking to end the 15-month conflict in Gaza.
On Thursday, Anwar emphasized that although reconstruction is a critical priority, the tragic loss of over 46,700 Palestinian lives and the displacement of more than two million individuals must not be ignored or forgotten.
