In a surprising turn of events, Ghanaian rapper Guru, whose real name is Maradona Adjei Yeboah, has been disqualified from running for president of the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
The SRC’s Vetting Committee, in a report dated August 16, 2024, announced that Guru, along with Lawrence Edinam Egleh, did not meet the necessary criteria to qualify for the election.
The vetting, conducted on August 11, 2024, scrutinized candidates for various positions. It was discovered that both Guru and Egleh, who are non-residential students, did not fulfill the requirements outlined in the UG SRC Constitution. Specifically, the constitution mandates that candidates for executive positions must either be residents of the university’s halls or meet other specified criteria.
The committee’s report clarified that, according to Article 30 (1) (a) of the UG SRC Constitution, non-residential students are not eligible for SRC executive roles. As a result, both Guru and Egleh were deemed ineligible to contest for these positions.
