According to app analytics firm Appfigures, spending on AI apps surged to $1.42 billion in 2024, driven by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This represents a 274% rise from 2023 when the app was launched in May. Amidst thousands of competing apps, some utilizing OpenAI’s technology, ChatGPT remains the leader, consistently generating more revenue than all other leading AI assistant apps combined.
These apps significantly boost Apple’s and Google’s profits, with both companies taking a 30% share of revenue from in-app purchases. Appfigures estimates the mobile AI app market to be worth $2 billion.
ChatGPT has been downloaded 353 million times, but its user demographics show a strong tilt. More than half of its mobile users are under 25, suggesting that younger individuals are perhaps more inclined to explore new technology. Alternatively, these users might be seeking academic assistance—Pew Research Center estimates that a quarter of U.S. teenagers have used ChatGPT for schoolwork, which has doubled since 2023.
Users aged 50 to 64 form the second-largest age group, comprising 20.2% of the users.
The gender disparity among ChatGPT users is notably pronounced. According to Appfigures, men account for 84.5% of users across different age groups.
