Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s national U-20 team, the Black Satellites, will leave Accra for Cairo later today to compete in the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
Led by head coach Desmond Offei, the team is aiming for a strong performance in the tournament as they look to qualify for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. Ghana has not appeared at the global event since 2015, making this AFCON campaign a crucial opportunity to return to the world stage.
The Black Satellites wrapped up their final preparations in Accra with a 2-0 win over Inter Allies, boosting morale ahead of their departure. The squad is expected to arrive in Cairo fully focused and ready for action.
Tough Group Ahead
Ghana has been placed in Group C alongside defending champions Senegal, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic. With only the top teams progressing, the group stage will be a major test for the Satellites.
Eyes on the Prize
The U-20 AFCON also serves as the qualification route to the U-20 World Cup, making every match in Egypt critical. Ghana last won the tournament in 2009, the same year they went on to win the World Cup — a feat they hope to replicate.
Confidence is high following their gold medal win at the 2023 African Games. That success has brought renewed energy and belief to the squad.
Ready for the Challenge
Coach Offei has spent the past two weeks fine-tuning tactics and finalizing his squad. With 13 teams set to compete from April 27 to May 18, the tournament will be intense, with matches leading up to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.
The Black Satellites are determined to make Ghanaians proud by reclaiming their spot among Africa’s elite youth teams and securing a place in the 2025 U-20 World Cup.
