Atalanta’s Title Hopes Fade After Draw with Torino

Atalanta’s Ederson Jose Dos Santos Lourenco da Silva celebrates after scoring their first goal.

Atalanta’s pursuit of the Serie A title suffered another setback yesterday as they settled for a 1-1 draw with Torino following a missed penalty by their star striker.

In the 74th minute, Italy striker Retegui’s feeble penalty attempt was thwarted by Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, who has successfully saved all three penalties he’s encountered this season.

Yesterday’s match left third-placed Atalanta six points behind league leaders Napoli. Napoli will face Roma tonight, shortly after Inter Milan takes on local rivals AC Milan.

Defending champions Inter trail Napoli by three points but have a game in hand against Fiorentina. This match was halted in December due to the on-field collapse of Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove.

Inter is set to fulfill that fixture on Thursday evening.

Atalanta has fallen behind in the Scudetto race, earning only seven points from their last six league matches, while Napoli and Inter are in peak form.

The hosts seemed destined for victory as Berat Djimsiti capitalized on Raoul Bellanova’s corner, scoring ten minutes before halftime. However, Guillermo Maripan equalized just five minutes afterward.

Atalanta struggled to overcome a resilient Torino. When they did, the towering Milinkovic-Savic thwarted their efforts and even taunted the furious home crowd after saving Retegui’s penalty.

Torino sits comfortably in 11th place after securing their fifth draw in a six-match unbeaten streak.
