Mikel Arteta has urged the Football Association to overturn the controversial red card issued to Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly during their 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.
Lewis-Skelly, 18, became the third youngest player to receive a red card in Premier League history after being sent off by Michael Oliver in the first half for a challenge on Matt Doherty.
The decision ignited controversy, as the incident occurred deep within Arsenal’s territory and was not deemed reckless.
Former England captain Alan Shearer described it as “one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in a long time.”
Arsenal’s manager, Arteta, is visibly upset and is seeking to have the decision reversed, similar to how Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes was cleared after receiving a red card against Tottenham earlier in the season.
“I am furious, but I’ll leave it with you,” Arteta stated. “I believe it’s clear that no further comment is necessary today, and let’s hope the right outcome is reached.
“Hopefully, we won’t need to appeal, but if necessary, there’s a strong precedent, as demonstrated by Bruno’s case this season.
“Yes, we found ourselves in a situation we shouldn’t have been in; at the very least, let’s ensure we’re in the right position moving forward and allow the player to continue his work.”
